Batik Notes: Dye Colour to Digital Colour

112 pages, 170gsm full colour

The notes I collected during four decades of exploring different techniques of using dye, wax resist and paper. Notes which go beyond technique to explore the art behind the craft. The notes follow the experiments with liquid dye, into new directions - using digital image, to making resist prints and books

New Artworks in 2024

In 2023 and 2024 I have continues to explore different ways of fusing hand and digital process, combining different media and materials.

Working on synthetic, non-woven materials has led me to find alternative methods of collage and coloration involving heat fusing, and thermal transfer printing.

Images for print are created on computer. Layered fragments of drawing, scribbles, and photographs - some printed simply on archival paper, while others are printed on to a unique substrate – layers of different light reflective materials. These prints on collage explore the tensions between the illusory marks and textures drawn on computer with hand drawn marks and cut shapes, which have been pasted between paper tissue layers and are later revealed through the waxed translucent surface. Marks might be drawn by hand or computer, or cut, pierced or punched; placed on the surface or be embedded within it.
