These digital images are Giclee printed with Epson Ultrachrome Pigmented inks. These inks have a long life expectancy which is further enhanced if they are placed behind glass or UV coated acrylic sheet. To make the image, a wide range of source material is scanned and combined with computer drawing. Through complex layering of image on screen the original idea might evolve into one or a sequence of linked visuals. Complexity is increased further if the substrate on which the image is printed is made up from layers of tactile material. The surface, or substrate the image is printed on has an effect on how the print looks, and how it should be mounted and framed. Many of the pieces I make are printed on to experimental surfaces in which fabric is layered with paper tissue. Recent experiments are with printing (with the same pigmented inks on to stiffened silk. These pieces are designed to be hung without glass. and are waxed, which will help protect against light and humidity. I also use Epson proprietary surfaces, such as Enhanced Matt paper and Canvas cloth. Canvas cloth is sprayed with a UV protective coating - to help protect prints which are intended for display without glass Prints should never be displayed in a position where direct sunlight falls upon them.
